- THE MASS ...
The focus is how the mass came to be as it is. It is worth stressing that this is most emphatically not one more revisitation of the dispute about the liturgy which so blighted the life of the church for nearly half a century. It takes as its starting point the assumption that for the overwhelming majority of contemporary Catholics the mass means the mass of 1970, the Ordinary Form of the Roman rite.
- WHERE IT COMES FROM
However, to understand the mass as it is requires some knowledge of how and why it was changed. This in turn needs a sense of what it was changed from. These pages therefore cover the history of the Roman rite up to the missal of 1570, which was still in place 400 years later.
- HOW IT WAS CHANGED
The reforms of the mass following the Second Vatican Council are cross-referenced with the Roman Missal of 1570 against the background of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of 1963 and of the Liturgical Movement, which so influenced it.
