EXAMPLE

of  translation according to the Guidelines of 1969 (‘Comme le prevoit’)

 

These extracts from the Canon are marked to indicate the scale and effect of the paraphrasing and omission in the first translation of the new mass. The Latin original on the left shows in square brackets elements not present in the translation. A literal translation, similarly marked, indicates what was left out, or to put it more neutrally, not explicitly translated. I will leave it to the reader to decide where such omissions are for stylistic reasons and where they seem to have been theologically or ecumenically motivated. Since the new translation covers everything in the original text, it is not necessary to give it here.

1. Several items, particularly titles and adjectives have been left out, which diminishes the rhetorical effectiveness and religious character of the text; the translation ignores the tripling of the words to do with ‘asking’

2..This section contains the most striking examples of the ways in which the translation avoids complicated structures such as relative clauses (those beginning ‘who’ or ‘which’). Also, some items have not been translated (such as references to ‘souls’ and ‘salvation’).

3.Simplified structure; ‘desacralising’ omission of ‘first of all’ and adjectives glorious’ before Mary, and ‘blessed’ before Joseph and apostles.
