Opening prayers*
Priest and server(s) enter in procession and stand at the foot of the altar, facing ahead. All make the sign of the cross:
1. *In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus sancti /R. Amen
2. *Psalm 42 (P/R) Introibo ad altare Dei I will go to the altar of God..
3. *Confiteor Deo omnipotenti (I confess to almighty God) .. Priest, then server confess. After the priest’s confession, the people/servers respond by praying that God will forgive him his sins. The priest then asks that God will similarly forgive them theirs.The priest closes with the words of absolution
4. After completing the psalm, the priest mounts the steps, praying silently for the forgiveness of any sins Aufer a nobis quaesumus, Domine ...Take away from us,we beseech you, Lord ...
5. Bowing over the altar, he kisses it, asking silently for the intercession of the saints whose relics are buried there: Oramus te, Domine, per merita sanctorum tuorum ... ‘We ask you, Lord, by the merits of your saints ...
6. *When the INTROIT, a single verse with antiphon from one of the psalms, is sung, the choir begins as the priest and servers enter; if it is said, the priest reads it out at this point.
7. *Kyrie: Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison (P/R alternating): Lord, have mercy/Christ have mercy)
8. *For the Gloria (priest with choir, originally with the people), the celebrant either stands at the centre of the altar and reads it, or in a sung mass, he intones the first phrase, Gloria in excelsis Deo, then recites it in a low but audible voice before going to his place and sitting down until the choir has finished.
9. *The priest next goes to the right-hand side of the altar and reads the COLLECT, beginning Oremus (Let us pray)... , ending Per omnia saecula saeculorum (for ever and ever) R/Amen

10. The EPISTLE/ R.‘Deo Gratias, is followed by a short extract from the Psalms or elsewhere in the Old Testament called
11 *The GRADUAL (related thematically to the Epistle)
In a Low Mass, the missal is transferred by a server to the other side of the altar, while the priest prays privately that he may be worthy of proclaiming the gospel 12. Munda cor meum’ ..Cleanse my mouth.
In a High Mass, the book is carried in procession and censed, as is the deacon or priest who is to proclaim it.

The Offertory
16. OFFERTORY VERSE followed by the Offertory Prayers
17. The priest offers up the host to God the Father, asking Him to accept his offering: Suscipe, sancte Pater ...
18. Pouring some water into the wine, he prays that we may share in the divinity of him who shared our humanity: Deus, qui humanae substantiae ... .
19. He then offers up the chalice Offerimus tibi, Domine, calicem salutaris …
20. and bowing prays that the sacrifice being offered is acceptable to God; In spiritu humilitatis ...
before calling upon the Holy Spirit to descend: 21. Veni, Sanctificator omnipotens ...
22. The priest symbolically washes his hands, reciting Psalm 25; I will wash my hands among the innocent’: Lavabo inter innocentes manus meas
23. He finally prays to the blessed Trinity to accept his offering: Suscipe sancta Trinitas ...
The silent Offertory prayers over, the celebrant turns to the congregation/server with a call to prayer (All stand):
24. Orate fratres .. Pray, brethren /R. ‘Suspiciat Dominus sacrificium ...May the Lord accept the sacrifice .

26. * Dialogue before the Preface beginning with the call to ‘Lift up your hearts’: ‘Sursum corda’ and ending with R. ‘Dignum et justum est’ (it is right and just)

Canon (said silently)
*Note the symmetrical structure, with ‘outer’ groups of three prayers before and after the consecration, then two similar inner groups, as if all focused on the words and actions of the consecration

Commemoration of the living: Memento, Domine ...

Hanc igitur oblationem ... asking God to accept the sacrifice

31. The Consecration,
of the bread: HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM ... For this is my body

The consecrated host and the chalice are held up in turn. The priest genuflects twice each time, and a bell is rung by the server before, during and after each elevation.

Supra quae .. remembering examples of sacrifice from the Old Testament
Supplices te rogamus ... asking angel to take the consecrated offerings to God

Commemoration of the departed: Memento etiam, Domine ...
Commemoration of the Saints II: Nobis quoque peccatoribus ...
34. Closing doxology with minor elevation of host and chalice; Per ipsum et cum ipso et in ipso est tibi Deo Patri omnipotenti, in unitate Spritus Sancti, omnis honor et gloria per omnia saecula saeculorum.’ Through Him and with Him and in Him etc) /R. Amen.
End of the Canon (All stand)
35.* Pater Noster:: P. ‘Oremus: Praeceptis salutaribus moniti, et divina institutione formati, audemus dicere’ We dare to say Pater noster qui es in caelis ..’ Our Father, who art in heaven ... R. ‘Sed libera nos a malo’ But deliver us from evil.
The next prayer, 36. ‘Libera nos ...’ takes up the theme from the response, asking God to free us from all evils.
37. During the prayer, the priest breaks the host over the chalice.
38. Making the sign of the cross with the host, he wishes the congregation peace: ‘ Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum’/ R ‘Et cum spiritu tuo’.
He puts a particle of the host into the chalice:

People’s Communion
44. Priest turns towards the congregation, lifting the host and says: Ecce Agnus Dei ... Behold the Lamb of God.etc. R. Domine non sum dignus ... etc Lord, I am not worthy etc ; (three times.]
45. Communicants kneel at the altar rail, receiving host upon the tongue: P. Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christe custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam/R Amen May the body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve your soul into eternal life
46. While rinsing the chalice after distributing Holy Communion the celebrant silently prays first in the name of all present Quod ore sumpsimus,...What we have taken with our mouth,. ’ then for himself: Corpus tuum Domine quod sumpsi May your body,Lord, which I have received ...’ , asking that the body and blood of Christ may purge him of all sin.
47 and 48. Priest says the COMMUNION VERSE (a short extract from scripture) and POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER (variable, like the Collect)/R. Amen

Dominus vobiscum’/R. Et cum spiritu tuo The Lord be with you/And with your spirit
49. Dismissal: Ite, missa est’/R. Deo gratias Go, the mass is ended/Thanks be to God
50. Priest bows low over the altar, asking the blessed Trinity one last time to accept the sacrifice: ‘Placeat tibi, sancta Trinitas
51 Final Blessing: Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater et Filius et Spiritus Sanctus’ /R Amen May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
