THE MASS: WHERE IT COMES FROM

The Making of the Roman Missal 500 -1570 AD

The history of the Roman mass up to the reforms of the 1960s and 70s falls into two halves, divided by the introduction of the standard Roman Missal in 1570. It remained in place until the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. In its version of 1962, it is still in use as the Extraordinary Form of the Roman rite. These pages review the most important developments shaping the mass through the middle ages.
